Book Sales!
I am excited to report that our sales in Europe appear to be
strong! I hope that we help a lot of folks on both sides of the
Atlantic with our book.

"We are
HUGE in Belgium...I tell ya, we are beloved in Belgium."
- Matt Dillon, in the movie "Singles" (I couldn't resist!)

July 8, 2011 Autism & Environment
A friend in the Bay Area pointed out
this very interesting article to me. It's a good
illustration of how much we are learning, and how little we
know, about what causes autism. I am not surprised that
environment plays
a major role because the current explosion can't be
attributed solely to genetics. I am wary about the
antidepressant part, though. I would love to see some data
reflecting the proportion of parents who are prone to
depression -- as opposed to whether or not they've taken
pharmaceutical antidepressants.

Louise Penny
Like most writers, I am an avid reader and a fan of other
authors. I loved
this from New York Times bestselling author Louise
Penny. It's like eavesdropping on a mentoring session
between an experienced, successful writer and a rookie
looking for her first publishing contract. I loved it. I
also happen to agree with her advice.

May 30, 2011 Autism Through a
Sister's Eyes
I just finished reading Autism
Through a Sister’s Eyes, by
Eve B. Band, Ph.D. and Emily Hecht (Future Horizons, 2001). This
book was co-written by a nine-year-old girl and her brother’s
psychologist. What a marvelous, sensitively-written book! I
highly, highly recommend this as a read-aloud for siblings of
kids with autism. It was a really good springboard for
conversation, and my daughter also loved the illustrations. You
can find it wherever books are sold, or
order directly from the publisher. |

April 11, 2011 Pica
In chapter 5, we talk about pica, the practice of eating
stuff that isn't food. I sometimes wonder what people choose to
eat and why. The people surveyed for the book talked about
things like pencils, cardboard, and styrofoam peanuts. Styrofoam
peanuts were a fave with one of my kids for awhile, too. I
tend to think of pica as the consumption of small things,
but I may need to rethink that assumption. Today,
this caught my eye -- aaaaack!!
