"Tears of
joy for this incredible book! I absolutely loved it, it was
so amazing, riveting, and informative! I found myself tearing up
through much of the book because it so reminded me of what I
went through. It also pained me to see how much I could have
gone through and what Bobbi Sheahan and so many parents have to
deal with. I had so many 'A ha,' and 'that's so true' moments
through the entire book. I loved the explanations of the
technical terms that we as parents are not knowledgeable about.
Dr. DeOrnellas' explanations of the ASD symptoms are insightful,
easy to understand, and so helpful in trying to comprehend and
facilitate what to do about dealing with various symptoms. I
also enjoyed her professional stories about the different
problems that she has encountered with her patients. Both
authors address, assess and provide strategies of the key issues
associated with ASD's and why children on the spectrum behave a
certain way. I also learned a lot of new terminology and
information about certain topics that were light-bulb
enlightenments for me. Bobbi Sheahan has a perfect balance of
humor and seriousness, love and enlightenment throughout the
entire book. I feel and appreciate her pain, compassion, love
and determination to help her daughter be the best she can be. I
love the comments from the anonymous parent contributors and
especially the analogy the man said about his son, 'watching his
son try to interact with friends is like watching a deaf person
try to dance.' There were so many things I could talk about that
just touched me so and that I could relate to. So many parents
will be blessed by this book. LOVE IT!!!"

"Every
time I pick the book up again, I am instantly glad that I've
done so, and with titles like 'Daddy's Chin,' 'This
Ain't Working the Way it's Supposed to Work' and awkward
questions from siblings like 'Does Grace Not Have To Do This
Chore Because of Autism?'... I can't help but feel like I
need to pass this book to every special needs parent I know."

"What I Wish
I'd Known About Raising a Child with Autism: A Mom and a
Psychologist Offer Heartfelt Guidance for the First Five Years
should bring hope and encouragement to all who know, love,
and work with children who have autism (ASD) and bring

"I
would recommend this book without reservation. It serves as a
good book for those who are considering that their child may be
autistic, or have children newly diagnosed as autistic. This
book would be a good beginner book for parents who want to know
about autism, and a great source for further reading on the
subject."

"In 'What I
Wish I'd Known about Raising a Child with Autism: A Mom and a
Psychologist Offer Heartfelt Guidance for the First Five Years,'
authors Bobbi Sheahan and Kathy DeOrnellas, Ph.D., give parents
the skinny on what it's really like to raise a child with autism
through the age of 5. Bobbi focuses on the toddler, pre-school,
and kindergarten years, and gives us a warm, funny, and
realistic look at this job -- and I should know! The majority of
the book was good, and Dr. DeOrnellas provided input on the
technical sides of therapy for the child with autism. I actually
was reminded of things I needed to know, although a lot of the
book had me nodding my head in all-too-familiar agreement with a
lot of the stuff she went through."

"This is a fantastic resource! The
conversational style makes it easy to read, yet it’s filled with
so much practical information. Parenting children with autism
comes with many challenges and unknowns. This book gives a
window to view one family’s experience; with an expert’s
insights woven throughout. Parents will get an idea of some of
the unique challenges to parenting child with autism, as well as
the reassurance that they are not alone. This book is not just
for parents, either. If someone in your life has a child with
autism, read this book. You will better understand and be able
to support the parents and their child."

"I found this
book to be very compelling. Although I don't have a child with
these issues, I have a friend that does. This book helped me
understand what my friend's family goes through. I really
appreciated Ben's commentary throughout the book. Great stuff.
Well written. Great read!"

"Great book for
anyone with a new autism diagnosis (or possible diagnosis)!
Also, would be invaluable for grandparents, friends, or
caregivers of children living with autism. Anyone not
understanding of autism cannot read this and come away without a
great overall view of autism and a huge helping of empathy and
hope. With autism rates rising, it is now rare to find anyone
that would not benefit from this book. Reading this book is like
a long conversation with your best girlfriend that has already
paved the way through autism for you. Great parent-to-parent
advice based up by references. It will make you feel like you
are not alone and tell you what to expect like a AAA road map.
Everyone's situation is unique and every parent does the best
they can – this book will inspire
you to continue to seek the best route for your family – and,
know you will make it. Beautifully written with real life, warts
and all, accountings of truly living as a family with autism.
Don't feel alone with autism – get this book, read it, and refer
back to it when you need a girlfriend that understands what you
are dealing with and knows what they are talking about."

"I've just
finished reading this emotionally honest, humorous and poignant
book! WOW!!! Although I couldn't imagine the roller coaster of
emotions of Bobbi and Ben's daily lives they make it sound so
easy. They have faced this challenge of raising their daughter
with faith, love, humor, and a determination to see her succeed.
Whether you know anyone that has a child with autism or just
need to broaden your horizon and step out of your comfort zone
this is a must read book! Hopefully you will have gained a sense
of empathy for parents of autistic children. Excellent!"

"Boxes of these
books should be available in the offices of pediatricians,
pediatric neurologists, developmental pediatric physicians,
family counselors and any other places that couples will walk
into as confused, hopeful, concerned parents and leave with the
life they thought they were living falling to pieces around
them. What you hear in those offices is often a dire prognosis
such as the information shared with my husband and me while our
2-year-old slept in my lap –
mental retardation, may reach function
level of an 8 year old, etc. That was my first rodeo and I had
no questions because the doctors had already foretold my little
boy's future. I couldn't even stop crying. That is the moment
someone should have put this book in my hands and told me to
have my cry but then move on and live my new life. This is the
most honest and comforting book I have read about accepting the
special needs diagnosis and running with it! We know our child
better than any doctor can and it takes courage to act on that
realization. This remarkable book from a mom who has been there
is pitch perfect advice on how to navigate in this very foreign
land that none of us expected to inhabit."

"I'm very
pleased with this book. "True to Life" for any family with an
autistic child, no matter where your child is on the spectrum.
Bobbi also used real comments from real families about some of
the trials and tribulations a family faces. I'm using this book
to give to anyone that my son spends much time with as a way to
give them a glimpse into our daily life without having to go
into all of our family's details. This book is a great insight
for anyone that will be spending time with any child on the
autism spectrum. Thank you so much Bobbi for having the courage
to write this book."

"This book is
wonderful for those parents who've just found out their young
child has autism, or for friends, grandparents, etc., of
autistic children. It's a huge dose of reality, heavily-laced
with humor, for what to expect, and how you can help your child
become their absolute best. I really appreciate the author
opening up her families' lives in order to help us see what life
with a special-needs child is like. Also, the information from
Dr. DeOrnellas was very easy to understand and helped to explain
the myriad of different types of Autism. I loved this book!"

"I stumbled
onto this unique book while browsing through the 'notes from
alumni' section of the Oral Roberts University alumni magazine.
Bobbi Sheahan, the main author, is an ORU graduate who is
currently raising her 6 year old autistic daughter. The book is
filled with real life experiences thus far in the family's life.
Additional comments from other family members are included with
the stories. The thing that really sets this book apart are the
comments made by Kathy DeOrnellas, Ph.D., the co-author, who is
the child's beloved psychologist. Her comments are set apart in
gray shaded type and are very enlightening. The reader can gain
professional insight into the behavior that is being described
in each family experience. What I found most amazing was the
amount of love and patience that is present in the pages. This
book would be a real encouragement to anyone currently raising
or living with an autistic child. The author mentions the
possibility of a future book as things progress in her
daughter's development. I will look forward to reading more
heartfelt guidance from someone who is truly 'in the trenches'."

"I recommend
this book for any parent with a child on the spectrum. It's
really comforting to read a book from someone who is a
specialist in more ways than one. My son was diagnosed over two
years ago at age two, and there is still so much that I don't
know or understand about autism. This book gives parents insight
on what to expect and what to do. My husband and I giggled about
the story when Grace ate the roses. =o) My son ate my roses
also. This is a great read for Moms and Dads with children on
the spectrum. There is hope!"

"Bobbi
Sheahan's newest book, What I Wish I'd Known about Raising a
Child with Autism, is one of the best and most poignant
stories I have read to date. Her love and her 'Grace' show
through in each page she writes. With the help of Bobbi and Dr.
D, I, as a teacher of special education/special needs, have not
only learned so much more than I expected but came away with a
better and different understanding of what families deal with on
a daily basis. I am so much more prepared to teach these angels
because of this understanding. The statement 'when you have met
one child with autism, you've met one child with autism' is so
true. Bobbi's humor (although she may not see it as clearly as I
do) combined with Dr. D's vast knowledge of kids on the autism
spectrum is what sets this book apart from others in the field.
Once I started reading Bobbi's story, I could not put it down. I
read it in less than twenty-four hours. It is amazingly moving
in parts. I laughed until I cried just picturing the dilemmas
presented in the book. Her unique writing style will take your
breath away and keep you interested through all its 250 pages.
It is entertaining while bringing home all the points necessary
for understanding daily life with a small child on the spectrum.
It is certainly a true read and a better one could not be found!
Whether you are a parent, a caregiver or a teacher, this book is
the ONE book that you must read!"
